Brimmer and May School
Brookline/Newton, MA
Project: Corkin Art Studio
Client: Brimmer and May School
Architect: Imai Keller Moore Architects
Challenges and Opportunities:
The Brimmer and May School is located in the Chestnut Hill Neighborhood of Newton and Brookline. A conversion of an existing carriage house / maintenance barn into an art studio was an intricately challenging project . The campus is currently built to its limits with emergency access and neighborhood harmony an essential component.
Our team conceptualized a fire lane that would integrate grass pavers and precast concrete pavers to create an emergency access drive that would also serve as a green corridor through the campus. This corridor would serve as the pedestrian connection to the rest of the campus.
This green corridor provides connections to the existing buildings and as well as to the recently renovated athletic field and provides an quaint seating opportunity for gathering and sports viewing.
The planting design was paramount in the creation of this corridor. The plant selection was made to be residential in scale and feel in order to blend in with the surrounding neighborhood. The plantings also provide a light screen between the neighborhood and the campus as well as help to shape the pocket seating areas.
